"BOOKS for TROOPS"
(content last updated 10/18/2012)
The Thrifty Peanut started the Books for
Troops campaign around August 2010 when a long-time customer and veteran of
Afghanistan returned home from his tour of duty. 2012 Campaign: Mission

Our mission with this campaign is very simple. We accept donated books & DVD's thru our stores that others in the community want to send to troops deployed all over the world. In late September or October, Soldier's Angels, a global organization that ships care packages to American troops everywhere, comes to Bossier City with a large truck. COSST (City of Shreveport Swim Team) usually helps us load this truck with the massive donations we collect during the year. They return to thier large warehouse in San Antonio, TX, where the books & DVD's are packed a few at a time into thier care packages, and then shipped out all over the world...
Please see our links below to learn more about our efforts to support our troops with this campaign, as well as the organizations we have partnered with that have made this campaign a huge success!!
This year, the Friends of Shreve Memorial Library, DeSoto Parish library, Longview Public Library, and Marshall Public Library all made huge donations. Additionally, The Thrifty Peanut Book & Media Warehouse purchased a portion of the Centenary booksale leftovers (7,782 books) and donated them to the campaign. We have had thousands & thousands of books donated by church organizations & people from all over this area. A very special thanks to each & everyone of our dedicated customers who donated books and/or money to this year's campaign - we couldn't have done it without you!
Shipping for the books to the Soldier's Angels warehouse in San Antonio got a little complicated this year due to the sheer volume & weight of the load this year. Soldier's Angels was going to out source the shipping and use an 18-wheeler for the job, but it fell thru at the last moment. We have decided to follow Lance Dowd's example from last year, so we are renting TWO 26 foot trucks & myself and a friend are delivering them to San Antonio personally. On 20-Oct-12 at 9am, we will have the COSST & Centenary swim teams and coaches on hand to load our trucks. Afterwards, the Bossier City sheriff's office & posse will give our trucks an official police escort all the way down I-20 to the last Louisiana exit...
On 18-Oct-12, Jason was interviewed live on air by Angela Thomas & Howard Hart of 710 KEEL news radio. You can hear that broadcast here:
They also interviewed Ricky John & Lance Dowd with Soldier's Angels. Listen to that interview here:
